Though not as well-known as Chianti, Southern Tuscany has important Etruscan archaeological sites and is steeped in a long history of wine and olive oil production. It also has two of the best spa towns in all of Europe.
Aside from Siena, other key towns include Montepulciano, known for its wines including "Il vino Nobile di Montepulciano"; Pienza, a charming hillside town and UNESCO World Heritage site; Chianciano Terme, considered to be one of the best health resorts in Europe; San Casciano dei Bagni, famous for its thermal pools which have existed here since the Roman Times.

Sprinkled in the vast, “big sky” space of the valley called Val D’Orcia are other welcoming – and less touristed - towns such Pienza, Radicofani and Montalcino, famous for its wines.
