Are you a villa person or a hotel person?

Answer this quick quiz and you’ll know if you are better suited to a villa or a hotel:

  1. Do you have to have fresh towels each day?
  2. Are you looking for a cushy bathrobe in the bathroom?
  3. If you put down a glass somewhere, do you want someone to pick it up and taken to the kitchen to be washed?
  4. Do you prefer daily maid services to clean up and make the beds?
  5. Would you like someone else to make dinner reservations and offer other concierge services to you?

Let’s be honest in setting expectations about whether a villa vacation is right for you. If you answered yes to a., b., or c., you probably are better off staying in a hotel than a villa, or at least a villa that’s fully staffed to function like a hotel.

So why ask about towels, bathrobes and such? It is important to differentiate between the hotel-type services provided by a hotel and the home-like atmosphere of a villa or apartment. In a villa, you very well may have to make your bed or pick up empty glasses and put them in the dishwasher.

So what are the trade-offs? In a villa you have more freedom, eliminating the confines of hotel rooms and other hotel guests. You will have your own kitchen, a living room, probably a private pool and lots of space.

It’s the freedom to camp out in the living room at night telling stories, drinking wine, playing cards or reading that novel that’s been on your bedside table forever. It’s the freedom to set your own alarm clock in the morning and having to scramble to get to breakfast before the dining room closes.. While some in your group may be early risers, others will sleep in and then savor that special cup of Italian or French coffee.
