Several "Must Sees" in Cortona
The Diocesan Museum is one of the most important in Tuscany for the richness of the works it exhibits, among which; some masterpieces of Italian artists such as Fra Beato Angelico 14th and
15th-century and Luca Signorelli 15th and 16th century, goldsmith’s art and of the textile art. Founded in 1945, it is home to precious canvasses and tablets’ collection going from the 13th to the 19th century, along with detached frescos, sculptures and liturgical fittings coming from the churches of Cortona and from its old diocese. Hours: Open every day 10am-5:00 pm. Closed Mondays.
Museo Civico - Seated inside Palazzo Casali official residence of the family that ruled Cortona 1325-1409 here you can find rare Etruscan artifacts as the bronze lamp IV century. Open every day 10 am-7:00 pm. Also contains a private collection of a rare Egyptian funeral boat and mummies.
Santuario of S.Margherita - Saint Margherita (Margaret) was born in the countryside around Cortona in 1247. She dedicated her life to help sick and poor. Pope benedict XIII canonized her in 16 May, 1728.There her body remains enshrined to this day which you can see in a glass case on top of the main altar. The sanctuary is outside the walls of Cortona not far from the Celle convent open 8:30 am to 12:00 and 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Convento delle Celle - The sanctuary which St. Francis founded in 1211 established just outside the walls of Cortona. It is in a beautiful location rich in art and interesting history of the pilgrims which passed by, including the cell where the great monk prayed and slept. During the week they have mass in the small church of San Michele at 7:30 am and on Sunday at 10:30 am.
