Orvieto-Todi

The area near Orvieto and Todi should be known as Umbria’s front door. Less than 2 hours from Rome, the area has definite Roman influences, from ancient Etruscan days, the Medieval period, its Papal sway and now as a place of second homes of wealthy Rome families. Orvieto is a dramatic city, perched on top of sheer cliffs, with an exquisite Duomo and interesting underground city of tunnels. Todi, also perched for protection in Medieval days, offers a good festival of ballet, music, cinema and theatre in the summer. This area is a great base from which to head into the wonderful towns of Umbria (nothing more than 1 hour away), southern Tuscany and Siena.
